It seems that researchers using the Sony PS3 for research purposes might have to start looking for other possible machines that are going to be cost effective. When Sony has stripped the Other OS option in the new generation of PS3’s it is the mark of the end of using them in research. After all, a business aimed towards gaming and entertainment might not prioritize their needs for research. I’ve been trying to regularly post on this blog and so far, there’s one idea I’ve been keeping up with more or less and that’s Funny Friday. In order to offer the OtherOS install, SCE would need to continue to maintain the OtherOS hypervisor drivers for any significant hardware changes – this costs SCE. One of our key objectives with the new model is to pass on cost savings to the consumer with a lower retail price. Unfortunately in this case the cost of OtherOS install did not fit with the wider objective to offer a lower cost PS3.
Awwww. Too bad, right? But it did make the cost of the PS3 lower now. Good for gamers but not good for those who want to play around with Linux on it. [...]
